Do you know what an Ice Dam is?
If your home has long icicles during the winter, you have an ice dam. The heat from your home melts the snow on your roof and the water runs down to your gutters. However, the gutter doesn’t get heat because it’s open to the cold air causing the water to freeze. The freezing water then overflows the gutter causing icicles to form and forming a dam on the roof. The dam continues to creep up the roof forcing the melted ice water to form a pool that pushes water back under the roof shingles. Therein lies the problem with ice dams. Water starts leaking into your home along the inside of the walls and ceiling. It starts out slow and you may not see the problem until bubbles start to form on the ceiling where the paint is holding water. Paint will also start sloughing off the sides of the wall where the drywall and insulation is wet. If any of these things start to happen in your home call us right away to get the job cleaned up.
